Chanhua Brooch Pine & Lune
Pine & Lune
Evergreen pines stand tall in the winter chill, while the bright moon casts its gentle light across the branches.
Inspiration
Inspired by Wang Wei’s poem Autumn Evening in the Mountains, particularly the line “The bright moon shines among the pines”, this piece captures the quiet elegance of pine branches reaching towards the moon.
In Chinese culture, the pine symbolises resilience and noble character. Its gracefully winding yet sturdy branches evoke the image of a pine tree standing proudly in a gentle breeze. Tiny golden beads adorn the branches like forest dew or scattered starlight. Behind them, a simple white disc represents the full moon, creating a delicate silhouette of pine branches reaching towards the moon. The composition also reflects the beauty of negative space in traditional Chinese art.
Cultural Meaning
The pine remains evergreen through the coldest seasons, symbolising resilience, integrity and strength of character. The moon, clear and serene, represents inner clarity, tranquillity and completeness.
Together, they convey the refined elegance of the traditional Chinese literati spirit, as well as wishes for longevity, well-being and a peaceful heart. The soft lustre of Chanhua craftsmanship adds a sense of enduring vitality to the piece.
Styling & Occasions
Blending classical elegance with everyday wearability, this accessory complements tailored jackets, winter coats and knitwear. It can also be worn as a traditional yajin (a decorative pendant attached to the front of a garment), paired with a modern qipao or a mamian skirt.
It also makes a thoughtful gift for elders, teachers or close friends, carrying wishes of serenity, longevity and well-being.
