✦ Craft Origins and Handcrafting Techniques

Chanhua: Flowers Woven by Hand, Blessings Woven to Last

An intricate art of silk threads, where every flower carries a wish.

Chanhua, also known by names such as Chunzaihua, Xianhua, Xiuxianhua and Jihua, is a traditional Chinese decorative craft in which silk threads are carefully wrapped around shaped paper forms supported by copper-wire frames to create ornamental flowers and other designs. It is often described as three-dimensional embroidery or sculpture made from silk thread.

A Unique Art of Traditional Chinese Handcraft

Chanhua is a distinctive art within traditional Chinese women's handicrafts. Copper wire provides the structure, shaped paper gives form, and silk threads bring each creation to life. Flowers, birds, insects, fish and auspicious Chinese characters are meticulously formed, one strand at a time.

The craft is often likened to three-dimensional floral embroidery, thread sculpture and even three-dimensional Gongbi painting, reflecting its intricate detail and sculptural quality.

Chanhua is often traced back to the Northern Song Dynasty and has been passed down through generations. More than an intricate technique of wrapping silk threads around paper forms, it also carries a rich tradition of folk customs and blessings woven into every strand. Motifs such as dragons and phoenixes symbolise good fortune, while others express wishes for prosperity and abundance. Each creation is a quiet expression of people's hopes for a happy and fulfilling life.

An Ancient Craft in Contemporary Life

Today, Chanhua continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its traditional craftsmanship. Its contemporary expressions range from Auspicious Purple Clouds from the East, a spring orchid creation presented on the Spring Festival Gala stage, to Chanhua-inspired garments showcased at Wuhan Fashion Week. Brooches inspired by the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, home decorations and creative cultural accessories are also bringing this traditional art into everyday life.

Using silk threads as a canvas and copper wire as a brush, artisans carefully wrap each flower and leaf by hand. Every creation resembles a miniature scroll painting, capturing the delicate beauty of traditional Chinese art in a three-dimensional form.

Through the hands of its makers, Chanhua continues to flourish in contemporary life, carrying forward its enduring beauty, vitality and blessings.
